Easing Back In

I know the peak is over and it won’t be long until the trees stand naked for the coldest weather (why is that?  wouldn’t they want to keep their leaves for warmth?). Anyway, I wanted to see if I was ready to hike again.  So I gathered some of my loyal warriors and headed out for a short, easy hike.

When we arrived at Gatewood Park, we were met with this:

Since we didn’t see a “no parking” sign and they did not mention specifically no hiking, we decided to soldier on.

It was almost Karma when I spotted this sign:

We took the eazy trail just for good measure.

This trail definitely lived up to its name “Beaver Creek” as we saw evidence of beavers everywhere.

Is this how they do it?

We were a little bummed to find that previous explorers had left behind some of their trash.  Seriously? How hard is it to pick up after yourself?

Fortunately, one of the objects of litter was a plastic bag.  Sharon would not rest until she collected all the trash.  Of course there were no trash cans, so she had to carry it back to the car.

Even though the hike was short, we all enjoyed being out in the woods together on this beautiful fall day.

The lake was pretty in spite of the sun taking the day off.

And I always enjoy my time in the woods with my buddies.

Oh, and when I got home, I realized I had reached my goal of 200 miles of hiking this year. Well, 201.6 to be exact, but who’s counting (ME, that’s who).  I’m not sure I’m ready for anything major just yet, so I’ll just ease back into it, one hike at a time.

And enjoy time with my sign ignoring warriors!

Thanks for visiting!

Hiking Fun!

What a fun weekend!  The kids were home and we managed not one, but two hikes!  The weather was incredible, the fall colors are peeking out, and the company was the best!

Saturday we went to Gatewood Park and hiked about 4.5 miles around the lake.  The big question of the day was – Where’s the Lake?

Having just been there in May when the lake was full:

You can imagine my surprise that this photo was taken from around the same spot.

No matter, we still had an excellent hike that we all enjoyed.

Even this guy.

While that was fairly easy terrain with limited ups and downs, today’s hike provided a bit more of a challenge.

High Rocks on Sand Mountain, offers a good workout without being too strenuous, AND it’s only 2.7 miles round trip, AND it has views!

So fun to climb on the rocks to grab the best views, but we also just sat and enjoyed being on the mountain top with no one else around.  We did not meet any other hikers until we were almost back to the parking lot.

I’m glad these two learned to appreciate hiking while they are young – it took me 50+ years to realize how cool the mountains could be.

2 hikes in 2 days and 0 pain (knees – good, hip – fine, back – no problem) must be the water aerobics.  Can’t wait for next weekend.

Long Overdue

After a very lengthy healing process, I’m happy to report that today I got back out on the trail!  It was a perfect day for hiking – sunny and cool.  My hiking women have been patiently waiting for me to get back in shape.  Even though only two women were able to join me today – others are waiting in the wings for the next hike.

It had been so long since we hiked, that we were all smiles and enthusiasm.

The 4 mile (round trip) hike today was a good way to ease back into hiking.  Yes, there were inclines, (some were steep enough to give us pause) but mostly it was easy terrain, well marked, and just the right distance for us to feel happily exhausted, but not overly stressed.

005

We found a little picnic area by the lake, so we stopped for a quick snack.

007

What a gorgeous view.

I hope this means I’m back, because it felt so natural being out there – almost as if it hadn’t been over 6 months – this hike was long overdue!

Baby Steps

It’s really criminal that we have had such perfect hiking weather and I’ve been stuck in rehab.  Today, I decided to throw caution to the wind, and just try a “baby” hike.  Heading out this morning, I wasn’t really thinking about a big hike, but it was such a gorgeous day, I really wanted to be on a trail somewhere.

We discovered a trail that had recently been cleared out for hikers, and learned that several other trails are currently being readied for summer.

Located inside of Gatewood Park, this trail takes you over a few creek crossings to get to some nice views of the lake, and it certainly lives up to its name.

010You can see that beavers have been chewing on the trees.011

We did have to cross the creek a few times, but it was pretty easy.dscn4743

And the lake was really beautiful!dscn4747

The thing I liked most about this trail, was the orange markings.  It is so well marked that I think I could bring my hiking women here and not worry (too much) about getting us lost.009

These markings were well positioned.

But it really didn’t matter where we were, just being back in the woods was enough to bring me joy!

008Fingers crossed that my body stays as happy as my frame of mind.
