One last hike for 2017

Today was my last women’s hike of 2017, Mother Nature was on our side.  She must have woken up in a good mood and thought “let me warm up the day for the Wandering Diva Striders.”  Sunshine, warm temps, great friends, made for a very fun December day.

Cindy, Peggy, Hannah, Jan, Joanne

So much enthusiasm for a “winter” hike, that we had to take two cars!  And, two pictures.

No vistas today, just a little jaunt on the Appalachian Trail, from the lower parking lot to the entrance to Angel’s Rest.

Then a visit to the Pearis cemetery, which I wrote about in a previous post – Falling into the Woods.  In this cemetery, you will find Revolutionary soldiers buried along with Civil War veterans.

This was a fun place to hang out and eat lunch.

From there we walked across the US 460 bridge, so I could show them where the AT crosses.

Everyone sees the signs on 460, but unless you see a hiker, you have no idea how the trail crosses the road.  That’s because you have to go under the highway.

By the way, we tried waving to all the cars going by and only got one person to wave back.

What goes down must come back up – lots of steps.

023And happy hikers!

As I introduced everyone this morning, I realized that exercise is what brought us all together.  I used to play tennis with Jan, I met Peggy and Joanne from high energy aerobics, and Hannah from water aerobics.  Cindy has been in my life a while.  I never think of hiking as exercise, but thank goodness for exercise classes and the chance to meet such fabulous women!

Can’t wait to see where we will go in 2018!

Wishing all my blogger friends a very happy, safe, and healthy holiday!

  1. What a beautiful, final hike for 2017. Mother Nature was indeed very kind to you. She was VERY GRUMPY with us today – and gave us a thick blanket of snow (unusual for us) and then drowned it out with a pile of rain. Definitely a BAD day for hiking here! 😦

  2. You have a great group of friends – I really didn’t think you would be getting out again this year when I heard of the recent snow….. But snow comes and snow goes and the AT is always waiting…… All the best to you and all your friends and family for a wonderful Christmas celebration. ❤

  3. I can’t think of a better way to spend a beautiful day than being outdoors enjoying nature with good friends.

From the way you are dressed, it looks like it was quite mild … unlike what we’ve been having. We were supposed to resume hiking this week after a one month’s hiatus, but snow halted our plans. Hiking in snow is one thing, but driving over an hour in wet slushy conditions is not recommended if it can be avoided.

You’re ending 2017 on a high note and I hope 2018 brings more of these great adventures. Merry Christmas! 🎄

  4. What a wonderful group of friends! It’s much more fun to hike with friends then alone. It’s not “exercise” when you’re enjoying yourselves. (That’s my motto anyway). I think treadmills are a special form of boredom torture, whereas a challenging hike is a lot of fun.

    Happy Holidays!

  5. Hello Karen and Hello WordPress!!
If I hadn’t created 3 scheduled posts several weeks ago, my absence from WP would be almost commplete (sadly!).
Your day sounds like such fun! I would totally have been in there trying to get folks to wave back 🙂
What a magnificent thing you have created, Karen. You should be proud of all that you have accomplished, of the women that you have inspired, and the fun you have had.
    I’m sure proud!! XO
